What is the Need for Strategy?

To ensure success in the Uttarakhand Combined State Civil/Upper Subordinate Examination, it is essential to devise a proper and dynamic strategy tailored to its nature. This strategic planning marks the first step toward success, as it lays a strong foundation and ensures that half of the journey is accomplished at the very beginning.

The examination is generally conducted in three stages: Preliminary, Main, and Interview. Progression to the next stage requires clearing the preceding stage. The nature and requirements of these three stages differ significantly from one another. Hence, a distinct and well-thought-out strategy is necessary for each stage to ensure success.

Preliminary Exam Strategy

To ensure success in the preliminary examination, it is vital to first thoroughly study its syllabus. Keeping all its parts and aspects in mind, set the order of preference according to your convenience and interest. Analyzing the questions asked in the last 5 to 10 years is equally important. Pay closer attention to those topics and headings where the trend of questions has been prominent.

Syllabus of General Studies (Paper I):

The syllabus of the first paper, General Studies, is primarily divided into six parts. Questions in this paper mainly pertain to traditional general studies, Uttarakhand state-specific topics, and current events. Detailed information on the syllabus is provided under the Syllabus section.

Topics include:

  • History of India, Culture, and National Movement
  • History and Culture of Uttarakhand
  • Geography of India and the World
  • Geography of Uttarakhand
  • Indian Polity and International Organizations
  • Polity of Uttarakhand
  • Economic and Social Development
  • Economy of Uttarakhand
  • General Science and Technology
  • Current Events of State, National, and International Importance

An in-depth look at the syllabus and past question trends reveals that a deep conceptual and factual understanding of certain sections is essential. For instance:

  • Who founded the Satyashodhak Samaj?
  • Under whose supervision does the Lok Sabha Secretariat work directly?
  • Who is referred to as Doon in Uttarakhand?

Such examples highlight that at least one-third of the questions in the UKPSC Preliminary Examination will have a reference to Uttarakhand.

Preparation Strategy for Uttarakhand-Specific Questions:

  • To tackle questions related to Uttarakhand, study a standard state-level book like Uttarakhand State Special or any reliable publication by the Uttarakhand Government's Publication Department.
  • The best way to retain and solve such questions is by preparing short, concise notes on factual information and revising them regularly.
    • For example, if a question pertains to the rivers associated with the Tehri Hydroelectric Project, create a list of major hydroelectric projects in India and their respective locations.

Recommended Resources

  • NCERT textbooks are highly recommended, as NCERT-based questions are common in General Studies.
  • Study materials available on the Drishti Website and the Special Issue Sections of Drishti Current Affairs Today by Drishti Publications are also very beneficial.
  • For current events, candidates can refer to daily newspapers like The Hindu or Indian Express and the current affairs section of the Drishti Website.
  • Standard monthly magazines such as Drishti Current Affairs Today should also be utilized.

Syllabus of General Intelligence Test (Paper II):

The second paper, General Intelligence Test, is divided into two parts:

  • First Part – Questions are asked on the following topics:
    • Aptitude Test
    • Communication and Interpersonal Skills
    • Logical and Analytical Ability
    • Decision Making and Problem-Solving
    • General Mental Ability
    • Numerical Intelligence
    • Statistical Analysis
  • Second Part – This part includes questions related to:
    • Comprehension Skills in English and Hindi
    • Grammar

Preparation Tips for CSAT

  • Practice previous years’ CSAT questions by categorizing them into different sections.
  • Solve questions systematically while avoiding the 'guess method,' as negative marking is applicable. Each wrong answer will reduce the actual score.
