Success in Paralympics

Why in News

  • In the Paralympic Games being played in Tokyo, the players of Rajasthan have brought golden success to the state and the country.
    • Avani Lakhera won gold medal in shooting while Devendra Jhajharia won silver medal and Sunder Singh Gurjar won bronze medal in javelin throw.

Key Points

  • Avni Lakhera of Jaipur won the gold medal in the women's 10m Air Rifle (Class SH-1) final by scoring 249 points.
    • She is the first Indian female athlete to do so.
  • In javelin throw, Devendra Jhajharia of Rajasthan won silver by throwing javelin 64.35 meters away and Sunder Singh Gurjar won bronze by throwing 64.1 meters away. It is noteworthy that earlier in Paralympics Devendra Jhajharia has won gold medals for two times.
  • It is worth mentioning that Avani Lakhera, who won gold medal in shooting competition, is working as ACF in Rajasthan Forest Department.
    • Devendra Jhajharia and Sunder Singh Gurjar are also working as ACF in the Forest Department.
  • The state government will give prize money of Rs 3 crore, 2 crore and 1 crore to the players who win gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
  • In the budget of 2020-21, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced that the amount given for winning gold, silver and bronze medals in Olympic Games will be increased from Rs 75 lakh to Rs 3 crore, 50 lakh to Rs 2 crore and 30 lakh to Rs 1 crore respectively.
    • The purpose of increasing the prize money is to encourage the players in the state.
  • Similarly, the prize money given to the winners for winning gold, silver and bronze medals in Asian and Commonwealth Games has also been increased from Rs.30 lakh, Rs. 20 lakh and Rs. 10 lakh to Rs.1 crore, Rs. 60 lakh and Rs. 30 lakh respectively.
  • In order to promote sports, medal winners in the state are being given appointments in government services on the basis of out-of-turn policy.
    • Avani Lakhera, Devendra Jhajharia and Sundar Gurjar, who won medals in Tokyo Paralympic Games, have been appointed by the State Government as Assistant Conservator of Forests in the Forest Department on out-of-turn basis.

Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-nomadic Tribes

Key Points

  • Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has started the process of formulation and implementation of welfare programs and schemes on the basis of their ideas and suggestions by establishing dialogue with different sections of the state.
  • Its main objective is to connect the concerned class with the main stream of development by providing maximum benefits. In this sequence, after re-organizing Panchayats of different classes, Panchayats of Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-nomadic classes are being organized.
  • It is noteworthy that for the development and welfare of denotified, nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes in Madhya Pradesh, a separate 'Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-nomadic Tribes Welfare Department' was established by the notification of the Madhya Pradesh government on 22 June 2011.
  • 51 castes of Madhya Pradesh have been included in the denotified, nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes. The main problem of these tribes is lack of permanent housing due to educational backwardness, economic deprivation and nomadic tendency.
  • To overcome the above problems of these tribes, a grant of up to Rs 1.50 lakh per beneficiary is given under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to provide them with residential facilities at one place.

Sumit Antil: Paralympics Gold

Why in News

  • On August 30, 2021, Sumit Antil of Sonipat, Haryana created history by winning the gold medal in Javelin Throw at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Key Points

  • In the men's javelin throw, Sumit broke three world records one after the other in the F64 category. First, he set a world record by throwing a javelin from a distance of 66.95 meters. Then in his second attempt, he improved his own world record with a score of 68.08 meters. In the fifth attempt, he made a world record by throwing a javelin throw from a distance of 68.55 meters and won the gold medal.
  • It is worth mentioning that in 2015, Sumit, who lost one leg in a road accident, was guided by coach Virendra Dhankhar. In 2018, Sumit got 5th rank in the Asian Championship. The next year in 2019, he won a silver medal at the World Championships. Sumit won the gold medal in the National Games held in the same year.

Medha Krishi Utsav

Why in News

  • On the occasion of Janmashtami, the Medha Krishi Utsav was organised by the Jharkhand State Cooperative Milk Federation at Fisheries Training Center, Dhurwa, Ranchi.
    • In this event, Agriculture Minister Badal Patralekh launched the scheme of providing Rs 1 subsidy per litre to milk producers who supply milk to Jharkhand State Cooperative Milk Federation.

Key Points

  • Addressing the milk producers in the programme, Badal said that Jharkhand has a bright future in the milk business and this is a golden opportunity for our milk producers, this will provide a source of income to the people of the state in their own state.
  • Jharkhand State Milk Federation which is popularly known as Medha brand is following the lessons of continuous progress in efficient management of National Dairy Development Board since last six years. Presently about 40,000 milk producing families from 18 districts of the state are associated with the Milk Federation and are supplying about 1.30 lakh litres of milk per day.
  • At present four dairy plants under Milk Federation (Hotwar, Koderma, Latehar and Deoghar) are being operated with a processing capacity of 1.40 lakh litres while additional three new plants namely Sarath-Deoghar, Sahiganj, Palamu are in the final stages of construction and production.
  • Apart from this, a Cattle Feed Plant, Mineral Mixer Plant, Bypass Feed and Cold Breeding Plant are also being established and operated by the federation in Medha Dairy premises located at Hotwar with the aim of reducing the production cost of milk producers and increasing the quality of milk.
  • On this occasion, a telemedicine program was started by the Agriculture Minister for proper and accessible advice related to the health of animals.
    • Under this programme, animal owners will be given advice regarding the health of their animals by specialist veterinarians.
