According to the information given by the Press Information Bureau, Government of India on June 18, 2023, the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2021 will be awarded to Gita Press, Gorakhpur.

  • The jury headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unanimously selected Gita Press, Gorakhpur for the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2021.
  • The award is being given to Gita Press, Gorakhpur for its outstanding contribution to bringing about social, economic & political change through non-violence and other Gandhian ideals.
  • It is known that Gita Press, established in the year 1923, is one of the largest publishers in the world. It has published 41.7 crore books in 14 languages, including 16.21 crore Shrimad Bhagavad Gita books.
  • This institution never took advertisements for its publications for revenue generation. Gita Press along with its affiliated organizations strives for the progressive development of life and welfare of the public.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the award of The Gandhi Peace Prize to Gita Press on the completion of its 100th anniversary is a recognition of the work done by the institute in community service.

  • The award is open to all individuals without distinction of nationality, race, language, caste, creed or gender.

Bihar Got Third Prize in the Category of Best States in the 4th National Water Awards

On June 17, 2023, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar presented the third award to Bihar in the category of Best States at the fourth National Water Awards ceremony of the Union Jal Shakti Ministry at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar presented the award to Dr. N. Saravana Kumar, Secretary, Rural Development Department, Bihar and Rahul Kumar, Mission Director, Jal Jeevan Hariyali Mission in the presence of Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
  • Rahul Kumar, Mission Director of Jal Jeevan Hariyali Mission, said that the Jal Jeevan Hariyali Abhiyan is being praised from many forums of the country and the world today. Bihar is the first state in the country to launch such a statewide campaign aimed at environmental protection and climate change challenges. The Central Ground Water Board of the Government of India has also appreciated this campaign in its report and has reported an increase in the groundwater of the state.
  • He said that during the operation period of three and a half years, about 30,000 public ponds, reservoirs, canals, pines and wells have been freed from encroachments under the Jal Jeevan Hariyali Abhiyan. More than 80,000 public water harvesting structures have been renovated.
  • In order to increase the level of groundwater, about 1.5 lakh soak pits have been constructed on the banks of public wells and ponds across the state. About ten thousand check dams and other water harvesting structures have been constructed in the catchment areas of small rivers, streams and hilly areas.
  • About 35,000 new water bodies have been created. Rooftop rainwater harvesting work has been done on 13,500 public buildings. Under the campaign, the micro-irrigation system in agricultural works is also getting emphasized.
  • It is known that in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched the Jal Jeevan Hariyali Campaign on October 2, 2019, which aims to reduce the adverse effects of climate change and protect the environment.
  • Under this campaign, 11 identified components are being implemented across the state, which include encroachment free of public water harvesting structures, their restoration, rooftop rainwater harvesting, large-scale construction of soak pits, construction of new water sources and micro irrigation.
  • Conducted in coordination with 15 departments of the state, this campaign is being monitored from the level of the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Mission under the Rural Development Department.

On June 18, 2023, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot approved Rs 9 crore for development works for wildlife conservation at three places in the state.

Why in News?

On June 18, 2023, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot concluded the ongoing three-day Rajasthan Kisan Mahotsav in Jaipur.

Key Points:

  • Through events like Rajasthan Kisan Mahotsav, farmers will get information about new farming techniques and agricultural equipment and their products will be widely publicised.
  • On this occasion, 10 progressive farmers and animal herders, who made innovations in the field of agriculture and animal husbandry, were honoured with state-level farmer awards under 'Aatma Yojana'. Each farmer was given an amount of Rs 50,000 as a prize.
  • Among them were Rukma Devi from Jaipur district, Bhuri Devi Meena from Tonk, Dharmaram from Barmer, Narayan from Dungarpur, Kamla Devi from Bhilwara, Puneet Chaudhary from Sriganganagar, Khushalaram from Jaisalmer, Balusinh from Rajsamand, Neeraj Kumar Tyagi from Dhaulpur and Bharatram from Tonk.
  • During this, short films based on the theme '4 years dedicated to farmer welfare' and Rajasthan Kisan App were screened.
  • On this occasion, the Chief Minister said that the state government has formulated policies and programs giving priority to agriculture and farmers. To fulfill the objective of making the farmers and animal herders prosperous and happy, 12 agricultural missions have been started and planning is being done at each point.
  • He said that the loan of 15 thousand crore rupees of 21 lakh farmers of the state was waived off. A separate agriculture budget was presented for the first time in the country for the farmers. The budget for agriculture has almost doubled as compared to 2018-19.
  • They have got great relief from the state government providing electricity to the farmers at the rate of 90 paise per unit and free electricity up to 2000 units. In the agro and food processing sector, a subsidy of up to Rs 2 crore is being given by the state government.
  • MSME Act has been brought for the young entrepreneurs of the state. In this, a relaxation of 5 years has been given in the necessary permissions given by the government for setting up industries.
  • The Chief Minister said that the state government has given financial assistance of Rs 175 crore to more than 40 thousand cattle herders suffering from lumpy disease. Rajasthan is the only state in the country to take such a decision.
  • He said that two milch animals are being insured for Rs 40 thousand each. Milk producers are being given a subsidy of Rs 5 per liter of milk. Now Rajasthan has come first in milk production in the country.

New Sub Health Centers will be opened in 441 Villages of Different Districts

Why in News?

On June 17, 2023, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot decided to open new sub-health centres in 441 villages of different districts of the state in the direction of expansion of medical facilities in the state and to provide better treatment to the common man and one female health worker for each health centre. The proposal to create the post has been approved.

  • With this approval of the Chief Minister, medical services will be expanded in the villages of the state and better medical facilities will be available to the local people in the area itself.
  • According to the proposal, 39 of Barmer, 33 of Dausa, 25 of Jaipur-I, 25 of Sikar, 23 of Alwar, 22 of Jaisalmer, 20 of Nagaur, 20 of Jhunjhunu, 19 of Bharatpur, 17 of Ajmer, 15 of Dungarpur, Hanumangarh K15, Karauli K14, Churu K14, Jaipur-II K14, Baran 14, Bhilwara 12, Jodhpur 12 new sub-health centres will be opened.
  • Apart from these, 12 from Tonk, 10 from Rajsamand, 9 from Kota, 9 from Bikaner, 6 from Dhaulpur, 6 from Bundi, 6 from Udaipur, 5 from Banswara, 5 from Chittorgarh, 5 from Sawai Madhopur, 5 from Ganganagar, 4 from Sirohi. New sub-health centres will be opened in a total of 441 villages, including 4 in Jalore and 2 in Pali.
  • The operation of the sub-health centres will be done in the available government building or rented building till the construction of the building. Also, 1-1 posts of female health workers (a total of 441 posts) will be created for each sub-health centre.
  • It is worth mentioning that in the budget 2023-24, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had announced plans to open a new sub-health centre in the state.

NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited Commissions its First Rooftop Solar Power Project at IIT Jodhpur

Why in News?

According to the information provided by the Press Information Bureau, Government of India on June 16, 2023, NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN), a wholly owned subsidiary of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), has conducted its annual examination at IIT Jodhpur (Rajasthan) on June 14, 2023, has commissioned the first rooftop solar photovoltaic project.

Key Points:

  • This 1 MW grid-connected solar project is implemented by NVVN under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model for a power purchase agreement period of 25 years.
  • Under the RESCO model for the installation of rooftop solar installations, a Renewable Energy Services Company (RESCO) designs, builds, finances and operates the complete solar power plant (roof or ground-mounted) and the consumer receives assured monthly units per kWh of electricity generated. pays the developer for the same and the disco adjusts the electricity units generated in the electricity bill of the consumer.
  • The project has been set up on the rooftops of 14 buildings on the IIT Jodhpur campus. The project will generate about 14.9 lakh units of electricity per year and will meet 15 percent of the electricity requirement of IIT Jodhpur.
  • The project will result in a reduction of 1,060 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

  • It is worth mentioning that NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited was formed by NTPC in the year 2002 to harness the potential of power trading in the country. NVVN holds the highest category 'I' Electricity Business License as per the latest regulation of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Cabinet Minister Lays Foundation Stone of Rs 6.5 Crore Canal Based Drinking Water Project in Villages of Rewari

On June 17, 2023, Haryana's Public Health Engineering Minister Dr. Banwari Lal taking forward the series of development works in the Public Health Engineering Department, laid the foundation stone of the canal-based water distribution project to be built at a cost of about six and a half crore rupees in village Nangal Mundi and Lala village of Rewari district.

Chief Minister Made Big Announcements for Self-Help Group

Why in News?

On June 17, 2023, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal made several major announcements while interacting directly with the beneficiaries of self-help groups through audio conferencing.

Key Points:

  • The Chief Minister said that out of all the ration depots allotted in the state in future, the government has decided to allot 33 percent depots to women. If any self-help group applies for a ration depot, it will be given priority.
  • Apart from this, if the self-help group applies for the contract of fish farming of panchayat land or pond, then it will be given a discount of 10 percent in the auction amount.
  • Even at the bus stand, 25 percent of the shops allotted through lottery or any other method will be reserved for self-help groups. If these shops are allotted through auction, the SHG will get a 10 percent discount on the auction amount.
  • If the family income of a member of the self-help group increases by more than Rs 1.80 lakh, then their ration card and Ayushman card will not be deducted for 1 year.
  • The Chief Minister said that a call centre would be set up in the office of the Haryana State Rural Livelihood Mission so that the beneficiaries belonging to the self-help groups could get various types of information.
  • It is known that in the year 2014, the number of self-help groups in the state was 812. In the year 2014-15, the state government paid attention to self-help groups and in the first year itself 2100 new self-help groups were formed and at present there are a total of 57,376 self-help groups in the state.
  • They have been provided Rs 54 crore 57 lakh revolving fund, about Rs 285 crore community investment fund and about Rs 880 crore bank credit linkage. In addition, the state government has increased the amount of the revolving fund from Rs 10 thousand to Rs 20 thousand.
  • The Chief Minister said that by joining SHGs, women are not only taking care of their families by adopting self-employment but also providing employment opportunities to other women. That's why it would be meaningful to call them 'Social Help Group' instead of Self Help Group.
  • Women associated with the 'Haryana State Rural Livelihood Mission' have been honoured by various institutions and organizations for their commendable work & contribution to society. Pooja Sharma, a resident of village Chandu in district Gurugram, was awarded the 'Nari Shakti Puraskar' by the President on the occasion of International Women's Day 2022.
  • During the conversation, the Chief Minister ordered the officials to develop a portal on which information about the products made by the self-help groups would be uploaded. By certifying the quality of these products, a brand identity should be given, so that people can buy Self Help Group products through this portal.
  • To make the products made by self-help groups available in the market, a program has been made to organize Swapan Aajeevika Mart and Saras Mela throughout the year. Under this, on the occasion of Teej and Diwali, Swapan Aajeevika Marts are organized at the subdivision level in the entire state.
  • Arrangements have been made to provide various types of training for SHGs in the state. 773 women are working as bank facilitators after getting computer training and passing out from the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance.
  • Apart from this, the state government is promoting 'One Block One Product' under the 'Padma Scheme' to give national and international recognition to the products made by SHGs.
  • Under the Tailoring Training Scheme, the amount of Rs 150 given for purchasing raw material has been increased to Rs 300 and the monthly allowance of Rs 100 has been increased to Rs 600. Under this scheme, sewing machines are also given after training. Since November 2014 till now 9,921 beneficiaries have been given incentive amount of Rs 5 crore 85 lakh 53 thousand.
  • In order to provide alternative sources of livelihood to the members of self-help groups, an interest-free amount of Rs 5 crore 41 lakh has been made available to 149 beneficiaries for vehicles under the Aajeevika Gramin Express Yojana.

Medical Students in Uttarakhand will Get Degrees from DigiLocker

Why in News?

On June 17, 2023, Uttarakhand Health Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat said that on the lines of higher education, now MBBS students in state medical colleges will get degrees and other educational certificates through Digi Locker. In this regard, instructions have been given to Uttarakhand Medical Education University to prepare a system for DigiLocker at the earliest.

Key Points:

  • Apart from this, all the hospitals and health centres of the state will be seen in one colour. For this, the departmental officers have been asked to decide the color code, so that uniformity can be seen in all the medical units.
  • It was told in the meeting that educational certificates of medical students will be available on DigiLocker so that medical students can download their degrees and other educational certificates anytime.
  • The Health Minister said that government medical colleges and nursing colleges will be linked to the e-Granthalaya portal while digitizing medical education so that medical students do not have to face the shortage of books.
  • Apart from course books, research papers will also be available online to the students on the e-Granthalaya portal. Apart from this, students will also get an opportunity to connect with the libraries of medical colleges and universities in the country & abroad.
  • The rate of patient registration fees will be made uniform across hospitals and medical colleges in the state. A proposal for this will be prepared soon and sent to the government.

On June 17, 2023, Uttarakhand Sports Minister Rekha Arya in a review meeting of the Department of Sports held in Dehradun directed to prepare a proposal to increase the honorarium of sports coaches on contract from Rs 15,000 to a minimum of Rs 48,000 on the lines of the Sports Authority of India.

Key Points:

  • The Sports Minister said that some sports coaches in the state were getting less honorarium than the PRD jawans. It has been decided to increase their honorarium on the lines of SAI so that the department can get enough and good sports coaches.
  • It is known that about 200 sports coaches are on contract in the state. Especially in the hilly districts, there has been a shortage of these for a long time. One reason for this is their very low honorarium.
  • A minimum honorarium of Rs 48 thousand is being given to the sports coach in SAI. The honorarium is given according to different categories. Similarly, the honorarium will be increased in the sports department as well, but the qualification for honorarium should be the same as that of SAI.

World Congress on Disaster Management

Why in News?

On June 17, 2023, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami informed that the sixth global conference '6th World Congress on Disaster Management' is proposed to be held in Dehradun from November 28 to December 1. The Chief Minister also released the brochure of this 6th Global Conference.

Key Points:

  • The theme of this Disaster Management Congress to be held in Uttarakhand is 'STRENGTHENING CLIMATE ACTION & DISASTER RESILIENCE'. Innovation, cooperation and communication for disaster management will be discussed & brainstormed prominently in this world congress.
  • Apart from this, special focus will be given on mountain ecology and communication. Uttarakhand will get a new identity from this workshop to be held at the global level.
  • The Chief Minister told how to do disaster mitigation; it is a great need of the Himalayan states. In the conference, in-depth discussions will be held on behalf of experts on disaster mitigation, how to minimize loss of life and property & use of a scientific approach.
  • Due to many reasons, when the rivers change their course, then there is a lot of loss of people and money. This will also be discussed by experts in the conference.
