Statue of Sidhu-Kanhu to be Built in the Park and Sports Ground of Telipada, Jharkhand
Why in News?
- Recently, the officials of Dhanbad Municipal Corporation said that along with the construction of a park and a sports ground in the name of martyr Sidhu-Kanhu with Rs 2 crore in Telipada, the statue of Sidhu-Kanhu will also be installed.
Key Points
- The park and sports ground are planned to be constructed at the place where people of the tribal community have been celebrating the Sohrai festival for centuries.
- Sidhu Murmu and Kanhu Murmu were the leaders of the Santhal rebellion (1855–1856). They rebelled against the British colonial power and corrupt zamindari system in eastern India (present-day Jharkhand and Purulia and Bankura in Bengal).
- India Post also issued a postage stamp of Rs 4 in their honor in 2002. Along with this, a Sidhu-Kanhu Memorial Park has also been built in their honor in Ranchi.
