Logistics Ease Across Different States

Why in News

According to the Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS), 2021 report released by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on November 8, 2021, Uttar Pradesh has jumped 7 places to 6th position in the Logistics Performance Index.

Key Points

  • Gujarat ranks first in the list of 21 states. It is followed by Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra respectively.
  • This time in the top 10 list, Uttar Pradesh is at sixth, Odisha seventh, Karnataka eighth, Andhra Pradesh ninth and Telangana 10th.
  • West Bengal, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Assam are ranked 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st respectively. In the list of North Eastern States and Himalayan Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir tops the list. Delhi has got the top position among the Union Territories.
  • The Logistics Performance Index is an indicator of the efficiency of logistics services needed to fuel exports and economic growth. The index aims to focus on improving logistic performance across states, which is essential for improving the country's trade and reducing transaction costs.
  • The first logistic report was released in 2018. Last year the ranking was not released due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gujarat was ranked first in the ranking list both in 2018 and 2019.

On November 8, 2021, President Ram Nath Kovind presented the Padma Awards announced for the year 2020 to 8 personalities from Bihar.

  • For the year 2020, one person from Bihar was awarded Padma Vibhushan and 7 people were awarded Padma Shri.
  • Former Defense Minister George Fernandes was posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his service in the field of public affairs.
  • At the same time, the following seven personalities were given the Padma Shri award-
    • Shri Sujoy Kumar Guha (in the field of Science & Engineering)
    • Shri Bimal Kumar Jain (in the field of Social Work)
    • Mrs. Shanti Jain (in the field of art)
    • Dr. Shanti Roy (in the field of medicine)
    • Shri Shyamsundar Sharma (in the field of Arts)
    • Shri Ramji Singh (in the field of social work)
    • Shri Vashisht Narayan Singh (Posthumous) (in the field of Science and Engineering)

Four Persons from Madhya Pradesh Got Padma Shri

On 8 November 2021, President Ram Nath Kovind honored 4 persons from Madhya Pradesh with the Padma Shri award for the year 2020.

  • Dr. Purushottam Dadhich, an 83-year-old Kathak dancer from Indore, has been honored with the Padma Shri award for his outstanding contribution in the field of art (classical dance).
  • At the same time, Abdul Jabbar, an activist who fought for the victims of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy-1984, has been given the Padma Shri award posthumously.
  • Industrialist Dr. Nemnath Jain has been awarded Padma Shri for his outstanding work in the field of trade and industry.
  • Dr. Leela Joshi, a gynecologist resident of Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, has been awarded the Padma Shri award for her outstanding work in the field of medicine at the age of 82. She is also known as 'Mother Teresa' of Madhya Pradesh.
  • A total of 141 people were selected for the Padma Awards for the year 2020, out of which 7 people were selected for Padma Vibhushan, 16 for Padma Bhushan and 118 for Padma Shri.

Udan Sikh Sardar Milkha Singh Sports Stadium

On November 8, 2021, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced the name of the mini sports stadium built by Karnal Smart City Limited in about 4 acres as Udan Sikh Sardar Milkha Singh Khel Maidan.

Key Points

  • The Chief Minister said that a statue of Sardar Milkha Singh would also be installed at the gate of this stadium and community center and library would be set up on its first floor on about 2.5 acres of land adjoining it.
  • A yoga shed will be built at one corner of the sports ground, where yoga classes will be held. Apart from this, an astroturf field for hockey will be built at a cost of about Rs.8 crore on 7 acres of land available in Kailash village, adjacent to Karnal.

One Year Exemption in Property Tax for Private Educational Institutions

Why in News

On November 8, 2021, Haryana Urban Local Bodies Minister Anil Vij decided to give one year exemption in property tax to private educational institutions of the state.

Key Points

  • Vij informed that private educational institutions established in the state will get the benefit of property tax of Rs 23.50 crore with the relaxation of one year.
  • Government educational buildings have also already been given one year exemption in property tax and this will entail financial expenditure of Rs 10.35 crore.
  • With this decision, 8986 educational institutions of 88 bodies of the state will benefit about Rs 33.85 crore.

Recently, Shubham Goyal of Jharkhand has been selected for the Prime Minister's Research Fellow (PMRF).

Key Points

  • The Prime Minister's Research Fellows was started by the Ministry of Human Resource Development to promote research work in the country.
  • This scheme was first announced in the budget of 2018-19.
  • Under this scheme, a fellowship of Rs 70,000 per month is provided for the first two years, Rs 75,000 per month in the third year and Rs 80,000 per month in the fourth and fifth years. Also 2 lakh rupees per year (total Rs 10 lakh for 5 years) are provided as research grants.
