Jharkhand Women's Asian Champions Trophy: India End League Stage at Number 1
Why In News?
On November 2, 2023, the Indian women's hockey team registered its fifth consecutive win by defeating Korea 5-0 in the ongoing Jharkhand Women's Asian Champions Trophy at The Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi and ended their campaign in the group stage by finishing number one in the points table.
Key Points:
- For hosts India, Salima Tete scored in the sixth and 36th minutes, while Navneet Kaur also scored in the 36th minute. Apart from them, Vandana Kataria scored the team's fourth goal in the 49th minute, while Neha scored the fifth goal in the 60th minute.
- Apart from India, teams from China, Japan and Korea also managed to make it to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, India will now face Korea, while Japan will face China.
- Earlier, in the first match of the day, Malaysia defeated Thailand 2-0. For Malaysia, Noor Muhammad (25th minute) and Noor Yousseni (52nd) scored goals.
- In the second match, China defeated Japan 1-0. China's lone goal was scored by Bingfeng Jiu in the eighth minute. China finished the league stage with nine points from five matches with three wins and two losses.
- Thailand did not win a single match in five matches and lost in five.
- Malaysia finished the league stage at number five with four points from five matches with one win, one draw and three losses. Malaysia and Thailand did not make it to the semi-finals and were eliminated.
- A total of six teams participated in this tournament being played on the basis of round robin league stage. These included teams from China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Thailand besides hosts India. After the league stage, the top-4 teams of the points table qualified for the semi-finals.
- India are looking for their first title since 2016, while the Indian team has won silver medals in 2013 and 2018.
