Proposal to Rename Jhansi Railway Station
Why in News
- On August 03, 2021, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha that the Uttar Pradesh government has sent a proposal to the Centre for renaming of the Jhansi railway station as "Veerangana Laxmibai railway station".
Key point
- An executive order is required to rename any village, town, city or a station, while an amendment of the Constitution with majority in Parliament is needed for changing the name of a state.
- Jhansi, situated on the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, has been an important princely state of the Peshwas of Pune in northern India and a major stronghold of the First War of Independence of 1857.
- It is noteworthy that earlier in UP, the name of Mughalsarai railway station was renamed to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay station. Allahabad city has been named Prayagraj. Whereas Faizabad has been renamed Ayodhya.
- It is noteworthy that the Union Home Ministry gives a green signal to the proposal to change the name of any railway station or place after getting no objection from the Ministry of Railways, Department of Posts, and Survey of India.

Madhya Pradesh Excise Act (Amendment) Bill, 2021
Why in News
- On August 3, 2021, Madhya Pradesh Excise Act (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was approved to increase the fine and penalty imposed on various types of crimes with a view to discourage excise-related offenses in Madhya Pradesh.
Key Points
- In this, there is a provision for punishment mainly for offenses related to spurious liquor under Section 49 (A).
- If a person dies due to the consumption of spurious liquor, then a provision has been made for life imprisonment or death penalty and a minimum fine of Rs 20 lakh.
- The amendment bill provides for physical damage caused by consumption of adulterated liquor unfit for human use, imprisonment of a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 8 years besides a fine of up to Rs 2 lakh for the first time and a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 14 years imprisonment and a minimum fine up to Rs 10 lakh for the second time.
- Similarly, for the detection of adulterated liquor unfit for human consumption, imprisonment for a minimum period of 6 months and maximum of 6 years and fine up to Rs 1 lakh in the first instance and minimum 6 years and maximum 10 years imprisonment for the second offense. A provision has been made for a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh.
- Any person who poses obstruction in duty or is guilty of assault under the Act may be arrested by any Excise Officer.
- In order to bring Mahua based liquor into the mainstream in Madhya Pradesh, it has been decided to give it the status of heritage (traditional) liquor. Rules will be set by the department for its controlled manufacture and sale. This will encourage small-scale industries of Mahua based liquor. The rights of the tribals already provided in the Act will be preserved as they are.

Why in News
- Recently, in the ranking released by the Chhattisgarh Urban Administration Department, Raipur Municipal Corporation stood first in the state in solving the problems of electricity, solid waste management and water supply among the 13 municipal corporations of the state.
Key Points
- The Corporation has promoted itself from 'D' to 'A' grade by taking a giant leap in the redressal of complaints lodged from 1st June to 31st July.
- To solve any problem of the ward residents, a Nidan-1100 helpline number has been issued in the corporation headquarters, in which people get their solutions by telling their problems.
- The corporation redressed 78.25 percent of the complaints quickly, 19.47 percent of the complaints were redressed with little delay while 3 percent of the cases remained pending.
