Gokula Jat
Why in News
- Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in his speech in Kirawali on January 31, 2022, mentioned the contribution of the brave warrior Gokula Jat.
Key Points
- It is noteworthy that in 1669-70, the Jats of the Mathura region revolted under the leadership of the local landlord Gokula. Religion was the main factor behind this revolt, as the local official of the imperial Mughal government, Abdul Nabi, had destroyed Hindu temples and insulted their women.
- The Jat rebellion took place at a time when the Mughal government was not weak in any way. The Mughal army pursued the Jats and leader Gokul was captured and killed. Despite this, the rebellion could not be completely suppressed.
- It should be noted that in order to increase public awareness about the contributions of local historical personalities, public places, buildings and roads etc. are being named after those personalities. In this context, a road and a square in Kirawali have also been named after Gokula Jat.
