The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) State Service Exam (SSE) serves as the gateway to a prestigious administrative career in the state. This stage is designed to test candidates’ foundational knowledge across a wide array of subjects, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of their aptitude and awareness.

Paper-I General Studies
- Current events of state, national and international importance.
- History of India and Indian National Movement with some weightage to Maharashtra.
- Maharashtra, India and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of Maharashtra, India and the World.
- India and Maharashtra - Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Urban Governance, Public Policy, Rights issues, etc.
- Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
- General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialisation.
- General Science.
Paper-II (General Aptitude Test)
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
- Decision - making and problem - solving.
- General mental ability.
- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (Charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc.- Class X level)
- Marathi and English Language Comprehension skills (Class X/XII level)
