Why in News?
The Animal Husbandry Minister of Rajasthan held a meeting with departmental officials to prevent the spread of Karra disease in Jaisalmer district.

- About the issue:
- The spread of Karra disease (botulism) has been observed in the western districts of Rajasthan – Jaisalmer, Barmer, Balotra and Phalodi . These districts are dry and semi-arid climate areas, where animal husbandry is the main basis of livelihood.
- Recently 36 animals died in Jaisalmer and 2 animals died in Phalodi due to this disease.
- The objective of this meeting was to focus on prevention of the disease, creating awareness among livestock farmers and ensuring availability of essential medicines .
- Karra disease:
- This disease is mainly caused by deficiency of green fodder and calcium and phosphorus .
- Due to this, animals start eating the bones of dead animals , due to which the germs of Bochulism disease enter the body and the infection spreads.
- The main symptoms of this disease include drooling from the mouth of the infected animal , stiffness in the front legs and paralysis of the tongue hanging out of the mouth.
- To prevent this, livestock owners are advised to provide food rich in nutrients .
