Why In News?
- On November 9, 2022, Uttar Pradesh Additional Chief Secretary (Sports) Navneet Sehgal informed that the Khelo India National University Games to be held in April 2023 in the country will be held in Uttar Pradesh.
Key Points
- The National University Games will be held in four cities of the state - Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Noida. About 20 sports competitions including rowing, basketball, judo, kabaddi, wrestling, swimming, boxing will be organized.
- Around 4,500 athletes from around 150 universities from across the country will participate in the games. Under-26 players will participate in the National University Games. There will be a special focus on women's games.
- Kabaddi, Judo, Archery and Fencing will be organized in Noida. Sports competitions related to Wrestling, Mallakhamba and Yoga will be organized in Gorakhpur and Varanasi. Other competitions will be held in the capital Lucknow.
- According to Additional Chief Secretary Sports Navneet Sehgal, organizing the University Games will create an atmosphere of sports in the universities and the players here will get an opportunity to become international level players. Organizing such competitions will also promote sports culture in the state.
- It is worth mentioning that this event is being given to Uttar Pradesh from the Sports Ministry, in such a situation, the Sports Authority of India's Khelo India headquarters located in Delhi will also play an important role in the University Games.
- Earlier, the first edition of the University Games has been held in Odisha (2020) and the second edition in Karnataka (2021). In the 20 events held in Karnataka, 4,500 players from 190 universities from all over the country participated.
