Why in News?

  • On October 18, 2022, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot approved the proposal to geo-tagging the assets, schemes and works of various departments and undertakings of the state through geographical information system (GIS) and linking them to the map. For this, financial approval of Rs 153.80 crore has been given initially.

Key Point

  • With this approval of the Chief Minister, now all the departments will be able to link geospatial data of their assets, facilities, schemes and programs to the GIS-based platform through the state-wide GIS system. This will facilitate decision making and inspection regarding resource collection and distribution, policy planning of various schemes and programmes.
  • With the above decision, the land-marked survey of various departmental schemes and works will improve service delivery at the regional level. Better management of resources during disaster or pandemic will also be possible through this system. Also, all the state buildings of the state will be available on the same map and it will be easy for the common man to reach these buildings.
  • It is noteworthy that a mobile app has been developed under geo-tagging. The app is being used extensively by various departments, such as Women and Child Development Department, PHED, Ground Water Department, Medical and Health Department etc.
  • GIS is a system designed to collect, store, modify and analyze data regarding geographical conditions on the earth's surface. At the same time, data management and submission can also be done through this system.
