Key Points
- According to the Department of IT and e-Governance, these six cyber forensic laboratories will be set up at Deoghar, Jamshedpur, Jamtara, Palamu, Giridih and Dhanbad. Jamtara is known as the 'Cyber Crime Capital' of India.
- For this the department will also sign an MoU with Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).
- These laboratories will be used by the police for forensic examination on various electronic devices like mobile phones and computers recovered from the crime scene and will help the law enforcement agency in solving cyber crimes as well as crimes of other nature.
- According to Jharkhand Police, cyber criminals (mostly school dropouts residing in interior areas) use 'phishing' as one of the most effective ways to dupe people. Phishing is a process in which cyber criminals pose as trusted representatives of banks and finance companies over a phone call and ask for the personal banking details of their target.
- In July, the Union Home Ministry had set up at least 18 cyber forensic laboratories across the country to fight cyber crime and crime against women with increasing use of cyberspace.
