Bison Census Started in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Why In News?

A three-day Gaur count started in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve on November 23, 2023. The census data will be sent to the office of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve on November 25.

Key Points:

  • Assistant Director of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Vivek Singh said that a three-day Gaur count is being conducted in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. After collecting the data, the figures of bison in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve will be revealed.
  • Officers and employees of all the areas of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve are engaged in Gaur (Bison) census. About seven hundred employees of the Tiger Reserve are engaged in the counting of bison.
  • Officers and employees of all the areas of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve will roam on foot from 6 to 9 am to count the bison. These people will fill the form with photo, GPS location and time of bison sighting and will also send the data to the office of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve on 25th November.
  • It may be noted that in 2012, bison were brought from Kanha National Park and settled in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. After that a continuous increase in the number of bison has also been seen. Bison are counted every four years.
  • Bison are mainly seen in Tala, Magadhi and Kallawah regions. It is estimated that there will be around 150 bison in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in 2023.
