- On July 27, 2021, the Bihar Legislative Assembly unanimously passed the Bihar Sports University Bill, 2021.
Key Points
- The Bihar government's Art-Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Dr. Alok Ranjan Jha introduced this bill in the Legislative Assembly.
- The Headquarters of the Sports University to be established will be in Rajgir (Nalanda). Apart from this, the Sports Academy being constructed in Rajgir will also come under this university.
- With the passage of this bill, Bihar became the sixth state in the country, where a sports university is being established.
- Before Bihar, such sports universities were established in Gujarat, Punjab, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.
- A minimum of one-third of the seats would be reserved for women in this university.
Benefits
- This will enable Bihar to develop into a 'Sporting Power' state.
- The players of Bihar will get a better environment and basic sports infrastructure. It is noteworthy that due to lack of basic facilities related to sports, many talented players of Bihar used to play for other states.
- With proper training, players of various sports of Bihar state will get better facilities for preparation of Olympics and other international games.
- The reservation of seats will encourage more women towards sports and thus, their number would increase in the field of sports.
