Why in News?
On July 29, 2023, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has decided to name 3 cubs (2 tigers and 1 tigress) of Ranthambore National Park's tigress T-111 on the occasion of International Tiger Day.
Key Points:
- The cubs have been named Chiranjeevi, Chirayu and Avani respectively.
- Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that Tigress T-19 was named Krishna after Commonwealth Games gold medalist Krishna Poonia in 2010.
- Similarly, it has now been decided to name the cub Avani after Para Olympic medalist Avani Lekhara.
- It is worth mentioning that when tigers were on the verge of extinction in the country, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi started 'Project Tiger' in April 1973. This has led to an unprecedented increase in the number of tigers in the country. In the last one month, 6 cubs have been born in Ranthambore National Park.
