Why In News?

  • On November 9, 2022, the 23rd Foundation Day of Uttarakhand was celebrated in different parts of the state including Gairsain, the summer capital of Uttarakhand.

Key Points

  • On the 23rd foundation day of Uttarakhand state, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of various development schemes worth Rs 166 crore at Gairsain (Bharadisain).
  • It is noteworthy that Uttarakhand came into existence on 9 November 2000 as a separate state. Earlier it was a part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. The demand for a separate state of Uttarakhand was fulfilled with the passing of the Uttar Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2000 on 25 August 2000. At the time of its formation, it was named Uttaranchal.
  • Uttaranchal was converted to Uttarakhand on the passing of the Uttaranchal (Change of Name) Act, 2006 on 21st December, 2006 and came into effect from 1st January, 2007 as per Government of India Notification dated 29th December, 2006.
  • It is bordered by Himachal Pradesh in the west, Uttar Pradesh in the south and international borders in the northeast, which meet Nepal and China. There are 13 districts in the state, namely- Dehradun, Haridwar, Uttarkashi, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Pauri Garhwal, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat and Pithoragarh.
