22 New Varieties of Wheat Dedicated to the Country

Why In News?

On September 1, 2022, Director, Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), Karnal, Dr. Gyanendra Pratap Singh said that under the supervision of IIWBR, 22 new species of wheat were dedicated to the farmers in the country.

Key Points

  • This is the first time that so many species have been approved simultaneously in 2022 in partnership with various research institutes of the country.
  • Of these, five species are from IIWBR Karnal (Haryana), besides area expansion of two species of the institute has also been done. This is a revolutionary step in the production of wheat in the country, as it will present more options to the farmers of the country.
  • These decisions were taken in the 61st seminar held on 29 and 30 August in Gwalior under the joint auspices of the Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), Karnal and Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh).
  • Dr. Gyanendra Pratap Singh said that the report was presented by the Species Identification Committee in the seminar, in which the committee discussed 27 proposals. Out of this, 22 varieties of wheat have been approved and approved for farmers' fields. These will soon be released by the Central Species Approval Committee.
  • Of these 22 species, five are from IIWBR Karnal. These include DBW-370, DBW-371, DBW-372 and DBW-316, besides DDW-55.
  • The production of DBW-370 with early sowing and high production has been approved for 74.9 quintals per hectare, 371 for 75.9 quintals per hectare, 372 approved for two zones has been approved for 60 quintals per hectare (75.3 quintals per hectare for Central India).
  • The production of 316 (late sown species) is 41 quintal per hectare for Northeast India, while for the central zone in limited water, the variety DDW-55 of Kathia wheat has been approved, in which only one watering is required.
  • Principal Investigator (Crop Improvement), IIWBR, Dr. Gyanendra Singh said that apart from this, two species of IIWBR have joined DBW-187 and 303 mega species. There are 187 such species, which have been approved for 20 million hectares, which has reached five million hectares of area in the country. In Haryana, 50 percent of these species are being sown.
  • Expanding the area of these two species has been approved for high fertility, early sowing in the middle zone. Apart from this, the species approved are PBW 826 (for two zones), PBW 883, HD 3369, 3406, 3411 and 3467 of IARI New Delhi, HI 1653, 1654, 1650, 1655, 8826, MACS of IRI Indore. Pune's 6768, 4100, CG Bilaspur's 1036 etc. are included. IARI New Delhi includes ten species
