Day 14: The following pie chart shows the distribution of medals to the athletes in the Asian Games held in 2020 in various sport events.

The Medals given for the Shotput event are 15. Study the pie chart and answer the questions given below: (50 Marks)

Distribution of medals in various sport events in Asian Games 2020

    (a)   What is the total number of Medals given in the tournament?

    (b)   How many medals are given in the event of Shooting?

    (c)   What is the percentage of Medals distributed in the Jevelin throw event compared to total Medals?

    (d)   Find the numbers of Medals given in High Jump and 5000m race events and what are the ratios of medals distributed in both events?

    (e)   What is the average number of Medals distributed in the event of 100m Sprint Race, High Jump and Long Jump?

As per the questions, the total number of medals given in the event of Shot Put is 15.

The area covered by the Shotput in Pie Chart is 30°.

The total number of medals given in the tournament is -

= Part of Pie Chart the Shot-Put area constitute x The number of medals given

    in the Shot-Put event

    = 360/30 ×15

    = 12 × 15

    = 180 Medals.

So, the total number of medals given in the tournament are 180 Medals.

    (b) How many medals are given in the event of Shooting?

    Answer:

The area covered by the Shooting event in the Pie-Chart is 90°.

    Then, 90/360 = ¼

So, the ¼ part of total medals are covered by the medals given in the shooting event.

The total number of medals given in the event of Shooting is =

= Total number of medals given in the tournament x ¼

    = 180 × ¼

    = 45 Medals.

Hence, 45 Medals were given in the event of Shooting.

    (c) What is the percentage of Medals distributed in the Jevelin throw event compared to total Medals?

    Answer:

    As per the question,

Area covered by the Jevelin Medals is 28°

    = 360/28

    = 12.85.

The total number of medals is 180.

The medals given in Jevelin throw event are = 180/12.85 = 14 Medals

So, the percentage of Medals distributed in the Jevelin throw event compared to total Medals,

    = % = 7.77%

    (d) Find the numbers of Medals given in High Jump and 5000m race events and what are the ratios of medals distributed in both events?

    Answer:

The total number of medals given in the pie chart is 180.

360/180 = 2. For every 1 medal there are 2° areas in the pie chart.

For the event of High Jump, an 8° area is covered in the Pie Chart.

The number of medals given in the event of High Jump is

= area covered by High Jump in the chart/area covered for 1 medal (2°)

    = 8/2 = 4 Medals

For the event of 5000m race, the area covered in the graph is 56°

The number of medals given in the event of 5000m race is

= area covered by 5000m race in the chart/area covered for 1 medal (2°)

    = 56/2

    = 28 Medals

Now, the ratio of Medals given in the High Jump to the Medals given in the 5000m race is

    = 4 : 28

    = 1: 7

Hence, the ratio of medals distributed in both events is 1 : 7.

    (e) What is the average number of Medals distributed in the event of 100m Sprint Race, High Jump and Long Jump?

    Answer:

For 100m, the area covered in the Pie Chart is 34°.

For Long Jump event, the area covered in the Pie Chart is 14°

For High Jump event, the area covered in the Pie Chart is 8°

The medals for 100m sprint race are-

= area covered by 100m sprint race in the chart/area covered for 1 medal (2°)

    = 34/2

    = 17 Medals.

The medal for long jump event is-

= area covered by Long Jump in the chart/area covered for 1 medal (2°)

    = 14/2

    = 7 Medals

The medal for High jump event is-

= area covered by High Jump in the chart/area covered for 1 medal (2°)

    = 8/2

    = 4 Medals

Average of Medals given in the events of 100m Sprint Race, High Jump and Long Jump is

    = (17 + 7 + 4)/3

    = 28/3

    = 9.33

Hence, the average of Medals given in the events of 100m Sprint Race, High Jump and Long Jump is 9.33
