    Wants and needs are two fundamental concepts that help distinguish between desires and necessities in human life.

    Wants Needs
    Definition Desires or preferences for goods, services, or experiences that are not essential for survival, but add comfort or pleasure to life. Necessities required for basic survival, health, and well-being. These are essential for human existence.
    Examples Fancy gadgets, luxury vacations, designer clothes, entertainment, etc. Food, water, shelter, clothing, healthcare, education, etc.
    Nature Subjective and influenced by culture, society, and individual preferences. Objective and universal, essential for all individuals regardless of culture or personal preferences.
    Fulfillment Fulfilling wants may provide satisfaction and enjoyment, but not fulfilling them does not pose a threat to survival. Fulfilling needs is crucial for survival and overall well-being. Not fulfilling needs can lead to adverse consequences and negatively impact health and quality of life.
    Influence Wants can be influenced by advertising, peer pressure, and societal trends. Needs are influenced by physiological and safety requirements inherent to human beings.

    Societal influences shape individual Wants and Needs:

    • Advertising and Media: Marketing and advertising campaigns often promote certain products, lifestyles, and experiences as desirable and essential, influencing individuals to perceive them as wants rather than needs.
      • For example, advertisements for luxury cars or designer clothing create a perception that owning such items is a symbol of status and success, leading people to prioritize these wants over more essential needs.
    • Peer Pressure and Social Norms: People often conform to societal norms and expectations, even when it comes to their wants and needs.
      • For instance, if a particular brand of smartphone becomes popular among one's peers, individuals may prioritize acquiring that phone as a want, even if their current phone meets their basic needs.
