    Answer:

    According to Dr. Daniel Goleman, emotional intelligence is “the ability to recognize, assess, control, and utilize your own emotions, and those of others”. Leaders who possess high emotional intelligence are better equipped to navigate complex social situations, inspire and motivate their teams, and make more thoughtful and well-informed decisions.

    How emotional intelligence impacts leadership and decision-making:

    • Empathy and Understanding: High EI enables empathetic leaders to understand their team members' emotions and perspectives, fostering trust and collaboration. Considering others' needs in decision-making leads to better outcomes for the organization. Eg. PM Modi emphathised ISRO Chairman when he broke down by unwelcoming news of Chandrayan 2.
    • Conflict Resolution: Emotionally intelligent leaders handle conflicts constructively, managing emotions for productive discussions and resolutions. They focus on finding common ground and long-term solutions, making decisions effectively.
    • Self-awareness and Self-regulation: Emotionally intelligent leaders are self-aware, manage emotions effectively, understand strengths and weaknesses, and make thoughtful decisions without being driven by emotions or ego. They avoid impulsive reactions that could harm their team or organization.
    • Inspirational Leadership: Emotionally intelligent leaders excel in communication, inspiring and motivating teams. They convey a compelling vision, connect emotionally, and create purpose, fostering engagement and better performance.
    • Adaptability: In dynamic environments, adaptability is crucial. Emotionally intelligent leaders embrace change, welcome new ideas, and adjust strategies to succeed.

    How it can be cultivated and nurtured in individuals:

    • Self-awareness exercises: Encouraging individuals to reflect on their emotions, reactions, and triggers. This could involve journaling, meditation, or seeking feedback from peers and mentors.
    • Empathy training: Providing opportunities for individuals to practice empathy by actively listening to others, considering diverse viewpoints, and putting themselves in others' shoes.
    • Emotional regulation techniques: Teaching individuals various strategies to manage their emotions effectively, such as deep breathing, mindfulness practices, and positive self-talk.
