  • 3. Cyclone Gaja made its landfall on which Indian State?

TAMIL NADU and PUDUCHERRY were hit by Cyclone Gaja - a tropical cyclone that originated in Bay of Bengal. According to the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP), India's east coast (where Tamil Nadu is located) is one of the six most cyclone prone areas in the world. Tropical storms are formed due to low-pressure systems which become depressions and then intensify into cyclones. They need a temperature of around 25-27 degree Celsius. Greater the temperature over sea, more powerful is cyclone. The Arabian Sea is relatively cooler than this temperature range, which the Bay of Bengal offers. This is why Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal face more cyclones than Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

  • 4. Identify the State which is called the ‘Falcon Capital of the World’.

NAGALAND is called the Falcon capital of the world. Amur Falcon starts visiting the Doyang reservoir in Wokha district of Nagaland in October but the actual migration takes place in the first week of November. Efforts of the local community to protect the bird paid off with international scientists declaring Doyang as one of the biggest congregations of nearly one million Amur Falcon and declaring the state as the ‘Falcon capital of the world.’ Amur falcons are the world’s longest travelling raptors. They breed in southeastern Siberia and northern China, and migrate in millions across India and then over the Indian Ocean to southern Africa before returning to Mongolia and Siberia. They get their name from the Amur river that forms the border between Russia and China.

  • 5. Identify the State home to the Balti Community.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region is home to the Balti Community. The Balti community of Ladakh's Turtuk village, on the India-Pakistan border and enclosed by Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges, has a distinct culture and a strong sense of self-reliance. The village was part of the Silk Route, and Balti caravans shepherded Central Asian and European traders through the steep, mountainous land. Turtuk was under Pakistan's control until India took it over after the 1971 war and is geographically part of the Baltistan region bordering Pakistan and China.
