The Nobel Peace Prize for 2018 has been awarded to Yazidi human rights activist Nadia Murad from Iran for her efforts to end the use of sexual violenceas a weapon of war and armed conflict.

She was one of around 3,000 victims of rape and other abuses by the Islamic State. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised her for her bravery in speaking out about her suffering and advocating for other victims.
In 2008, the United Nations determined that use of sexual violence in war and conflict is a war crime.
In 2016, she was appointed the United Nations’ first Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.
