    • He gained recognition in 1996 when he established the human rights organization Viasna in response to the harsh suppression of dissenters following President Alexander Lukashenko's rise to power.
    • In 2011, he was imprisoned for three years on tax evasion charges. This arrest was widely condemned by global human rights activists.
    • He has stood up for the right to criticize the powerful and in defence of the fundamental rights of citizens. Together they demonstrate how important civil society is for peace and democracy.
