Raising Day of ICG

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) celebrated its 48th Raising Day on 1^st February 2024.

• The interim Indian Coast Guard (ICG) came into being on 1^st February 1977. The ICG in its present shape was formally inaugurated on 18^th August 1978 as an independent armed force of the Union government with the enactment of the Coast Guard Act 1978, to prevent the sea-borne smuggling of goods that hampered the economy.
  • The ICG is India's maritime security force, the responsibilities of the ICG include offshore security, marine safety, and coastal security as well as safeguarding India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
• The force maintains order in international shipping lanes and India's vast seas.
• According to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, ICG department is ranked as the fourth largest Coast Guard in the world.
