Why Imagination?

  • 05 Sep 2018

If you can change your mind, you can change your life."       — William James

Yes, you’ve guessed it right!

One of my friends, in a state of drunken stupor, once remarked that ‘life is a road, if the road is taken - fly; if the sky is taken - dive; if the water too is taken - die’. He is only in my memories now, God rest his soul.

I like to apply what he had said to Imagination. Because if we try and close all doors leading to us imagining things - we may actually die. And this would be kind of a spiritual death we wouldn’t be even aware of.

Imagination is deeply connected to us learning and living. It is impossible to separate them into neat compartments for the purposes of study. In fact, I’d like to throw the dog a bone here and say that having an active imagination help us lead better lives. Having this better life would naturally reflect in our work, in our relationships and in keeping our moral compass polished.

There have been considerable talk about how our education system forbids and actually stops anyone from exercising their God-given rights to imagination. There is rote learning, strict and fixed curricula, and then there are parents. Parents of my generation were hell bent on keeping choices limited for their children. The Doctor-Engineer-MBA trinity was being universally applied irrespective of a kid’s inherent set of skills. For parents, it was like having cream on top of a caffe latte. They knew cream was bad for diabetes but they just couldn’t refuse the temptation. To my great dismay, in that equation parents have now added IAS. Being an IAS officer is soon no longer going to be a Public Service thing because it is going to be hijacked by parents. For this and the future generations, it is going to be a Parent’s Dream thing.

From parents, I remember parentheses. This is, as the dictionary explains ‘a message that departs from the main subject’. Here, since I’m talking about having an active imagination and because I’m departing from topic, I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be, am I not? Only an active imagination can digress that fast from topic, is it not?

Anyways, I’d like to tell you folks why we’ve named our blog Imagination. This is because..

Imagination is key. Imagination is freedom. Imagination is that soldier who refused to die in battle. Imagination is that hiss of the serpent we hear at night. It brought us the Sphinx. Gave us Keats. It brings change - it changes us. We can be afraid of it, but then we need it. We can feel it in our guts. We can feel it in our bones. We feel it when we hang up our boots. We sense it when we eat, sleep or pray. It is everywhere. In a way, We are it.

In this blog we will imagine the Human Condition. We will imagine the path. We will bask in the light, we will meet the dark. We will take a break from the hectic schedules. We will fight the fights. We will stay fearless. We will stay ahead.

First, we’ll take that long road driving us into our thoughts, then we’ll soar against the mighty wind, and then finally we’ll dive into that divine pool of imagination for a relaxing swim.

Long way to Africa, friends! Wake up and Imagine.

Regards, Dave.
