MPSC State Service Exam: Pattern, Syllabus and Strategy

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) conducts the State Service Exam, also known as the MPSC Rajyaseva Exam. It is a highly competitive examination aimed at selecting candidates for various administrative roles within Maharashtra. The exam is conducted in three distinct stages: 

  • State Services Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)  
  • State Services Main Examination (Written)
  • Personality Test (Interview) 

Preliminary Examination 

The Preliminary Examination consists of two objective-type papers: 

  • Paper-I (Compulsory): 200 marks 
  • Paper-II (Qualifying): 200 marks (minimum qualifying marks: 33%) 

 Key Details About the Examination: 

  • Both papers consist of multiple-choice questions. 
  • The question papers are available in both Marathi and English. 
  • The standard of Paper-I is degree-level, while Paper-II is a mix of school and degree-level topics. 
  • Clearing the Preliminary Examination is mandatory to qualify for the Main Examination. 
Note: It is important to mark that there is a 1/4th negative marking for both Paper I and Paper II, except for the decision-making questions in Paper II, which do not carry any negative marking for incorrect answers.

Main Examination 

The Main Examination consists of six papers: 

  • Paper I: Descriptive 
  • Paper II to VI: Multiple Choice Questions (Objective Type) 

 Key Details About the Examination: 

  • Question papers are available in both Marathi and English. 
  • The standard of Papers I and II is class XII level, while Papers III to VI require degree-level understanding. 
  • Marks from all six papers are considered for the final merit list.

Personality Test (Interview) 

The final stage of the MPSC selection process is the Personality Test or Interview. It carries a maximum of 100 marks and is vital in determining the final rankings. This stage evaluates: 

  • Knowledge: Assessing the candidate’s understanding of various subjects. 
  • Personality: Gauging attitude, confidence, and opinions. 
  • Problem-Solving: Evaluating the candidate’s ability to address challenges.
